What is a Registered Agent and Business Registration and what states require them?

A Registered Agent accepts official mail for your business in person. This includes service of process papers to notify you of pending lawsuits, tax forms, official government correspondence, and other legal documents. Currently, the only state that requires a Registered Agent is Indiana.

One option would be to hire a company offering registered agent services. These companies offer a standard set of services, and many of them are present in multiple states. Another alternative would be to hire a law firm offering registered agent services.

Business registration is a type of registration that allows the public to know who is operating a company. Many states require that you register your business with a state regulatory body prior to offering goods or services to citizens of that state.
